La Salle

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 2,071 · Postal code: 11015

Tradition has it that Pietro di Tarantasia was born here, elected pope in 1276 as Innocent V. Above the door of the town hall, the Maison Gerbollier, a relief shows a goldfinch pecking at thistle flowers: it ended up on the comune's coat of arms.

La Salle sits at the entrance to the Valdigne, under Monte Paramont, 3,301 metres. The parish church of San Cassiano has a Romanesque bell tower and an old hospice, burned by the French in 1691 and rebuilt in the nineteenth century; the ruins of the Châtelard castle lie a little further on. In 1952 a Neolithic tomb came to light at Derby, during work on a fire well. Its 2,071 residents got the village's name back only in 1946, after Fascism had merged it with Morgex as Sala Dora.

Saint Cassian and the Badoche

📅 Every year, from 11 to 13 August

From 11 to 13 August La Salle celebrates Saint Cassian with the Badoche: the young men go round the houses at dawn to announce the feast, and after Mass they dance on the church square.
