Blessed Guglielmo de Léaval in the parish museum
📅 Every year, on 7 February
On 7 February Morgex celebrates Blessed Guglielmo de Léaval; the parish museum of sacred art, beside the church of Santa Maria Assunta, keeps some of his belongings.
The name means a heap of stones: meurdzìe, in the local patois, are the low walls built from stones gathered out of the Dora Baltea to divide one vineyard from the next. It is pronounced Morjé, without the final x, and in Roman times the place was called Moriacium.
Under the Savoy the town was the seat of the mistralia of the Valdigne, and in 1318 duke Amedeo V granted it its franchises; the fortified tower of the de l'Archet family still stands in the centre. The 2,078 residents got their original name back in 1946, after the years when the village was called Valdigna d'Aosta. The other place names describe the ground: Biolley is the birch stand, Marais the marsh, La Ruine the area swept by a flood.
