Saint Nicholas and the castle on the promontory
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Champorcher celebrates Saint Nicholas in the parish church of 1728; just above it, on a promontory, stands the medieval castle built by the family of Bard.
The name, local religious tradition holds, comes from a soldier of the Theban Legion: Saint Porcier, having escaped the massacre, is said to have climbed into this valley to preach, and Champorcher would be his field. In 1320 the Savoy built a tower on the remains of the fortified house of the lords of Bard, and that tower ended up on the coat of arms.
The 398 residents live at the head of the valley, on the Ayasse. The lordship stayed with the Savoy until 1682, when it passed to the Freydoz, for whom it was raised to a barony in 1746. The parish church of San Nicola dates from 1728; higher up, near Lake Misérin, stands the sanctuary of the Madonna of the Snows.
