San Marco dei Cavoti

Province: Benevento · Region: Campania · Population: 3,544 · Postal code: 82029

San Marco dei Cavoti has 3,544 inhabitants on a spur at seven hundred metres, with a view that reaches the Partenio, the Taburno and the Matese. The village was born twice: the earthquake of 9 September 1349 razed the nearby settlement of San Severo, the survivors moved a few kilometres north, and in 1352 the feudal lord Luigi Shabran offered concessions to anyone who came to live there.

Those who accepted were a colony of Provençals who had come to the south of Italy in the train of Charles I of Anjou: they came from Gap, and since the people of Gap are called Gavots, the village became San Marco dei Gavoti and then dei Cavoti. Of them there remain the names of the districts Francisi, Franzese and Borgognona, and a fourteenth-century tower that was a jail and was later made into a bell tower. Today San Marco is known for something else again: it is the town of torrone, and the firms that make it are nearly all family businesses.
