Carinola lies in the Ager Falernus, the land that gave the Romans Falernian, the wine their poets quoted more than any other. The town prospered as long as the water ran: in the sixteenth century the channels around it were no longer kept clear, the countryside turned to marsh, and typhus and cholera arrived. The population thinned out, and in 1818 the diocese too was suppressed and joined to Sessa Aurunca.
The territory is made of scattered hamlets, and the main town is the smallest of the principal settlements; Falciano del Massico split away in 1964 to become a municipality of its own. In 1943 Carinola housed a German command post on the line supporting the Gustav: for what its people endured, in 2004 it was awarded the silver medal for civil merit.
