Pianello Val Tidone

Province: Piacenza · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 2,290 · Postal code: 29010

The village castle was razed in 1164 by the troops of Frederick Barbarossa; in its place, two centuries later, the Dal Verme built the keep that stands in the centre. They had arrived in 1378, when Gian Galeazzo Visconti granted Pianello to Jacopo Dal Verme, a captain of fortune who already held the rocca d'Olgisio and Bobbio.

The rocca d'Olgisio, on the watershed between the Tidone and the Chiarone, was during the war the command post of a partisan brigade: the Nazi-fascists attacked it twice, the first time they were driven back, the second they took it and left it badly damaged. The name of the municipality changed in 1862: before, it was simply Pianello. In the village there already stood, in the seventh century, a church dedicated to Saint Columbanus, of the monks of Bobbio.
