Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June Ampezzo, a municipality of 1,030 inhabitants in the province of Udine, celebrates its patrons Saints Peter and Paul.
Between September and October 1944 Ampezzo was the capital of the free Republic of Carnia, the territory the partisans took from the Germans and governed for a few weeks. The year before, at Plan dal Sac, two hundred and eighty New Zealand prisoners had been brought here.
The name appears for the first time in a document of 762. Then Carnia belonged to the patriarchate of Aquileia, from 1077, and from 1420 to Venice, which took the timber for its ships from these woods. In 1917, after Caporetto, the village was occupied by the Austrians; the Italian cavalrymen entered it on 2 November 1918.
