In this comune a count is kept of the farmsteads, one by one: the name, the height, how many people lived there in 1951 and what state the buildings are in now. Avaris had fifty-three, Campo thirty-five, Aveona twenty-six, Tolvis eighteen. Today almost all are empty: of some the walls remain, of others only the meadows that someone still mows.
They came into being when there were too many people and even the awkward places had to be farmed; the economic boom emptied them in a few years. The town hall is not at Socchieve but at Mediis, and there are seven hamlets. From Cavallaria you can see the point where, in 1692, the landslide of Buarta broke away.

On 11 November Socchieve celebrates its patron Saint Martin, to whom one of the town's churches is dedicated; the other patron, Our Lady of the Annunciation, is celebrated on 2 and 15 August.
