Ciampino

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 37,235 · Postal code: 00043

Ciampino was born with flight: the "G.B. Pastine" airport, opened in 1916 for airships — Umberto Nobile's Italy set off from here — is among the world's oldest still-operating airfields, and watched twentieth-century history land before becoming Rome's low-cost gateway. The town, an independent municipality since 1974, grew around tracks and flight paths.

Among the plain's surviving vineyards and the villas of the hills, the threshold vocation remains: Rome on one side, the Castelli on the other. Those landing here have the Appia Antica ten minutes away: few notice, and it's a pity.
