Risen beside the ruins of Tusculum, Frascati is the most famous of the Castelli Romani for two very different liquids: the white wine that carries its name worldwide, and the particle beams of its laboratories. Here in 1959 the INFN switched on the storage ring that paved the way for modern colliders; ESA-ESRIN, ENEA and CNR work next door — few places in Europe pack so much research.
Above the town of 20,755 towers Villa Aldobrandini with its Water Theatre, the most scenographic of the Tusculan villas. Lunch at a fraschetta tavern, Rome glittering twenty kilometres below, remains the right way to square papacy, physics and vineyards.
