Millions of travellers rush through it, few stop: a mistake. Besides Italy's main airport, Fiumicino keeps the imperial harbours of Claudius and Trajan — the hexagonal basin Trajan ordered in the second century is still there, a perfect sheet of water in the Porto oasis — and the necropolis of Porto on the Isola Sacra, among the best preserved in the Roman world.
The town too has a signature: the old part of the settlement, along via della Torre Clementina, was designed by Giuseppe Valadier. The municipal territory runs north of the Tiber delta and keeps changing face: sandy beaches, wetlands, pine woods, farmed countryside. The fishermen's quarter lives on sea cooking: the dock lines up some of the best fish tables in Lazio. A veteran's idea: last night here before the flight, spaghetti with clams included.

On 5 October Fiumicino celebrates its patron Saint Hippolytus; the town also hosts the Museum of the Ships, home to five Roman ships found during the airport's construction works.
