Sacrofano

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 6,668 · Postal code: 00060

Sacrofano has 6,668 inhabitants on the rim of the caldera of an extinct volcano, one of the eruptive centres of the Sabatini mountains, active between six hundred thousand and forty thousand years ago. The volcano is not entirely silent: north of the village there are still solfatare, and the smell of sulphur can be caught. Out of these rocks have come minerals that had never been described before: at Valle Bianchella and on Monte Cavalluccio several were identified for the first time in the world, and one of them carries the village's name, sacrofanite.

The name, though, was a different one until 1928: Scrofano. There is indeed a sow on the town's coat of arms, and that is one of the explanations of the place name; the other derives it from the Latin Sacrum Fanum, the sacred temple that is supposed to have stood on Monte Musino. The oldest document, of the year 780, writes fundus Scrofanum. One singular thing about this comune is that it borders Rome and has not been eaten by it: 97 per cent of the territory is protected natural land, nearly all of it inside the park of Veio.
