The patron of Bolsena is Saint Christina of Bolsena, celebrated on 24 July in the Basilica of Santa Cristina.
It was here that in 1263 a priest doubting transubstantiation saw the host bleed during Mass: evidence of the miracle was brought to Orvieto to Pope Urban IV, who in 1264 issued the bull Transiturus, instituting the feast of Corpus Domini. Bolsena still holds the sacred stones, one of which is always on display for the veneration of the faithful. The town also holds the Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara and the Convent of Santa Maria del Giglio.
