Avegno

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,539 · Postal code: 16036

At Avegno they cast bells. The Picasso family worked here from 1594, in one of the oldest foundries in Italy, and the village carries a silver bell on its coat of arms; since 2012 the rooms of the old foundry have housed the bell museum.

The municipality is a scattered one: the town hall stands at Molino Nuovo, down in the valley, while the three historic hamlets, Salto, Testana and Vescina, hang between 250 and 300 metres along the road that climbs from Recco to the colle Caprile. Until Napoleon, Avegno had no administration of its own: in practice the parishes governed. The population is 2,539.
