The patron saints of Avegno are Saints Peter and Paul, celebrated on 29 June: the town's first official written mention, dating from the 13th century, attests to the presence of the parish church of San Pietro, whose current building bears the title of San Pietro Apostolo. The territory later became a fief of the Malaspina family.
Avegno has for centuries been tied to bell production: the Picasso foundries, whose original core dates as far back as the 16th century, are among the oldest in Italy in this field, active since 1594. The town's coat of arms depicts, in the centre on a blue field, a silver bell, symbol of this celebrated economic activity, topped by a red cross on a silver field recalling the Saint George banner of the Republic of Genoa; the bell museum, inaugurated on 8 September 2012, is housed in the premises of the Picasso family's old foundry. The town also preserves the church of Sant'Antonio Abate, in the hamlet of Salto.
