Recco

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 10,106 · Postal code: 16036

A railway viaduct passes above Recco, and for its sake the town was wiped out. Between November 1943 and June 1944 the Allies bombed it twenty-seven times: 127 civilian dead and more than 90% of the houses destroyed.

It was rebuilt from nothing in the 1950s, on a human scale, but almost nothing of what stood before survives; for this it was given the gold medal for civil merit in 1992. On 8 September, for the Madonna, the sky over the Golfo Paradiso fills with fireworks. There are 10,106 residents.
