Sori

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 4,404 · Postal code: 16031

On 1 July 1584, 1,500 pirates arrived. Sori was sacked, destroyed and burned, and 134 people were carried away: against a force like that a town of sailors and fishermen could not hold. Saracen raids, in that century, were something you expected.

On Sori's origin the ideas are uncertain: some would have it Greek, founded around the seventh century BC by the same people who, in Ligurian territory, founded Marseille and Nice. The first documents are from 1143 and name the «Consuls of Sori»; from 1606 the town ended up in the capitaneato of Recco, joined to Pieve Ligure in the municipality of Pieve di Sori. There are 4,404 residents.
