Uscio

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,275 · Postal code: 16036

The name looks self-explanatory: uscio means doorway, and Uscio stands where you go in, on the ridge between the Recco valley and the Fontanabuona. And yet it does not. It seems to come from Angustium, as the Romans called it, and the form Uscio has been official only since 1734.

In 570 the bishop of Milan took refuge in Genoa to escape the Lombards, and out of that exile came the first four Ambrosian parish churches in Liguria: Recco, Rapallo, Camogli and Uscio. The one here, Romanesque, is a national monument. In the sixteenth century, when Turkish pirates were working the coast, it was the people of Recco who came up here. The population is 2,275.
