Camogli

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 5,481 · Postal code: 16032

They called it the city of a thousand white sailing ships: Camogli was a maritime power in miniature, and its tall painted houses — seven, eight storeys sheer above the beach — helped sailors recognise home from the sea. The little harbour, the basilica on the water and the Dragonara castle compose one of Liguria's best-loved scenes.

On May's second Sunday, the Fish Festival fries tons of fish in a record-breaking giant pan: a true folk feast, held since 1952. From here boats leave for San Fruttuoso and Punta Chiappa, where the tonnarella net is still lowered as it was centuries ago.
