The castle on the sea, planted in the water since 1551 against corsairs, is Rapallo's signature: around it, the Art Nouveau seafront recalls the season when this Tigullio town hosted Nietzsche, Hemingway and Ezra Pound, who lived here for years. The little harbour and historic cafés keep that air of the cultured riviera alive.
The cable car climbs in eight minutes to the Montallegro sanctuary, six hundred metres above the gulf: the view repays the vertigo. And from Rapallo the boatding for Portofino and San Fruttuoso leaves at your doorstep: the most scenographic Liguria starts from the pier.
