Lorsica

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 519 · Postal code: 16045

Damask is made here. From the fifteenth century Lorsica worked silk — mostly women's hands — and the cloth went down to the port of Genoa to be sold across half of Europe. Today one craft workshop is left, still working on original looms from the early twentieth century; there is a museum devoted to damask.

The municipality also has a detached piece: Barbagelata, at 1,125 metres in the upper Val Trebbia, where the highest church in the Ligurian Apennines stands. The old village was burned by the Nazi-fascists on the night of 12 to 13 August 1944, and three peasants used as guides were killed. The population is 519.

Saint Catherine of Genoa, patron of a town of damask weavers

📅 Every year, on 22 March

Lorsica celebrates Saint Catherine of Genoa on 22 March; the town, ceded by the Fieschi to the Republic of Genoa in 1433, developed from then on, with the help of Genoese artisans, the successful silk weaving and damask production for which it is known.
