Moconesi

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,695 · Postal code: 16047

Christopher Columbus's grandfather, Giovanni, was born here. The name of the village, though, is far older than he was: it means house of Moco, and a Moco Meticanio already appears on the bronze tablet of Polcevera of 117 before Christ, among the representatives of the Genuati in their dispute with the Langatii.

Moconesi is a scattered municipality and the town hall stands at Ferrada, in the upper val Fontanabuona, along the Lavagna. One piece of its territory, however, lies elsewhere: the hamlets of Casun and Cornale form an administrative island in the upper val Trebbia, enclosed between Torriglia, Montebruno and another island, that of Barbagelata. The population is 2,695.
