Aurigo

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 346 · Postal code: 18020

The name comes from the Latin apricus, open to the sun, and that is all you need to know about the position: the village lies stretched along a spur in the sunshine, below what was the castle of the counts of Ventimiglia, destroyed in 1480.

The curious thing is that the family is still here: on the ruins of the castle lives the marquis Luca Ferrero De Gubernatis Ventimiglia, who has also been mayor, and in the sixteenth-century palace a little further on a count of the same house. On 14 April 1800 the Austro-Russian troops of general Jablonoski burned the houses and turned on the inhabitants. The population is 346.
