Chiusavecchia

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 565 · Postal code: 18027

The name says what the place was for: chiusa, the narrows where the valley closes and the way through can be controlled. Over the Impero stream stands the bridge, medieval in origin and partly rebuilt in the nineteenth century, which lay on the salt road.

In 1609 the fief was bought by Cesare Cernusco, chief auditor of the duke of Savoy's Chamber of Accounts: he had been born here, and he bought his own village back. Above the houses, in the sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Oliveto, there is an Agati organ of 1861 which the villagers had restored at their own expense. The population is 565.

Saint Blaise, patron of a town with a sanctuary and an organ paid for by its residents

📅 Every year, on 3 February

Chiusavecchia celebrates Saint Blaise on 3 February; its parish church, formed from a pre-existing complex and restored at the end of the 17th century, holds a 15th- or 16th-century wooden crucifix, while the sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Oliveto holds a 19th-century organ restored with the residents' own contributions.
