Pontedassio

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,356 · Postal code: 18027

In 1824 the Agnesi family, who came from here, took over an old mill and started making pasta: they ended up with four plants inside the village. The Agnesi house is now the town hall.

The name is said to come from a bridge of planks that linked the valley floor to the hamlets, or else from the farm of a Roman centurion called Assio. After the Doria, in 1576, Pontedassio passed to the House of Savoy and stayed Savoyard until Napoleon: on the square you can still see the old town hall, an arcaded building in the Piedmontese manner. The population is 2,356.
