Armo

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 124 · Postal code: 18026

With 124 residents Armo is the least populated comune in the province of Imperia. For centuries its shepherds fought with those of Caprauna, over the border in Piedmont, and the reason was always the same: grazing land.

The village sits at the head of the valley on the Arogna, below the Rocca delle Penne, 1501 metres. The parish church holds a polyptych of Sant'Anna from 1535; a Roman bridge still crosses the stream, and the little church of San Bernardo, high above, was rebuilt by the villagers in 1953.

Fun facts about Armo

Armo's parish church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and goes back to the sixteenth century: until 1551 it was dedicated to the Assumption, then the title changed. Between 1627 and 1635 it was rebuilt, and it holds a polyptych of Saint Anne from 1535 and a painting of 1578 showing God the Father, the massacre of the Innocents and the souls in purgatory.

Beside it stands the oratory of the Immaculate Conception, with a relief of 1634 on its front. Up on the heights, at 921 metres, the sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve sits among the pastures of Monte Frascinello; lower down, on the Arogna, a Roman bridge still stands.
