Rezzo

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 371 · Postal code: 18026

Above the village, between nine hundred and fourteen hundred metres, lies the wood of Rezzo, which they also call the Wood of the Fairies: nearly six hundred hectares of coppice, the largest beech wood in Liguria. For centuries it gave firewood, charcoal, dry leaves and the fruits of the undergrowth.

Up there runs the pass of the Mezzaluna, which Italo Calvino names in The Path to the Spiders' Nests. The castle, on the other hand, is gone: in 1672 the Savoy regiment and three companies of Swiss soldiers took the village while the people barricaded themselves in the twelfth-century keep, and then they dismantled it. The population is 371.
