Pieve di Teco

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,400 · Postal code: 18026

Pieve di Teco did not grow by itself: it was founded. In 1233 marquis Antonio di Clavesana decided to make a new village of it, with a new castle and a new church, and brought down two or three hundred families from the communities of the Arroscia valley.

Then it had to pay for its position. As a Genoese captaincy on the Piedmontese frontier, walls and castle were taken and rebuilt over and over. In 1672 a quarrel over pastures between Rezzo and Cenova was enough to reignite the war: the Corsican mercenaries hired by Genoa were beaten at a spot that has been called Paperera delle Guardie ever since. The population is 1,400.

Saint Sebastian, patron of a town born by Genoese design

📅 Every year, on 20 January

Pieve di Teco celebrates Saint Sebastian on 20 January; the town was founded as a new fortified settlement for around 200-300 families, equipped with a new castle and the church now known as the oratory of San Giovanni Battista.
