The name does not mean twenty miles. It comes from Album Intimilium, «capital town of the Ligurian Intemeli», and the road signs did their part by shortening it to XXmiglia. The coincidence helps: from Nice it really is about twenty miles.
The coat of arms reads Civitas ad arma iit, «the people ran to arms»: it recalls 49 BC, when Domitius, a supporter of Caesar, was killed here and the town rose against the Roman garrison. Caesar, who had passed through on his way to Spain, made it a municipium. There are 23,926 residents.
