Camporosso

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 5,419 · Postal code: 18033

The name is a colour. Campus Rubeus, red field: for the red oleanders that grew along the banks of the Nervia, or for the soil, which around here tends to red. The first documented mention is from 1256, or perhaps 1259.

From Roman times there remain a funerary cippus and the ruins of the aqueduct that carried the waters of the Seborrino to Albintimilium, today's Ventimiglia. Ventimiglia itself was the problem: the closeness set off bloody battles and repeated military occupations. In the sixteenth century, against the Saracen pirates, the old town was walled with three gates, demolished in the eighteenth. There are 5,419 residents.

Saint Sebastian, patron of one of the Eight Places confederated in 1686

📅 Every year, on 20 January

Camporosso celebrates Saint Sebastian on 20 January; on 21 April 1686 the town, together with seven other eastern hamlets of Ventimiglia, formed the Magnificent Community of the Eight Places, one of the earliest forms of confederative cooperation among Ligurian towns.
