The patroness of Calice al Cornoviglio is Our Lady of Loreto, celebrated on 10 December. The parish church dedicated to her, in the main hamlet of Calice Castello, was built in 1638: it stands in the central Piazza del Leone, seat of the town hall and the main access point to the castle, around which the medieval village known as Borgofreddo develops along the southern half of the hill.
The territory was captured in 1416 by the Republic of Genoa from the Malaspina family, becoming an important stronghold against attacks by the Milanese, who nevertheless managed to detach the hamlet of Madrignano from Calice, taking it from the Fieschi family. After the conspiracy of Gianluigi Fieschi in 1547, Calice passed under the rule of the Doria family, briefly returning to the Malaspina in 1710; this constant change of masters preceded the definitive cession in 1772, when the Malaspina ceded the fief to Leopold II, sovereign of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Among the territory's other religious buildings are the church of the Madonna del Carmine, in the hamlet of Borseda, whose 17th-century construction was commissioned by the marchioness Placida Doria, and the church of Saints Margherita and Nicola in the hamlet of Madrignano.
