The patron of Pignone is Our Lady of the Assumption, celebrated on 15 August, in the pieve of Santa Maria Assunta, to which the town's earliest documentary evidence dates, after the year 1000: small communities began gathering around it. A papal bull of Pope Eugene III, dated 1149, extensively describes the settlement, which according to historians may already have existed in Roman times as a pagus.
The present church was built in 1339 over an earlier paleo-Romanesque pieve from the year 1000, and restored during the 18th century: inside are preserved frescoes dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. It was the Fieschi who rebuilt the pieve and improved the road network, to ensure a better connection with Levanto to the west and Sarzana to the east. The town also preserves the sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, within the Cinque Terre National Park.
