Borgio Verezzi

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,327 · Postal code: 17022

In 1385 pope Urban VI owed a debt to Genoa, which had helped to free him from captivity in the Kingdom of Naples. He settled it in land: Pietra, Toirano, Giustenice, Borgio and Verezzi passed to doge Antoniotto Adorno and to the Republic.

Borgio, however, had no defences, and with pirates about that was no small matter: in 1564 the Genoese Senate sent Antonio Rodaro to build a tower there, and it still stands. The two villages, Borgio by the sea and Verezzi on the hill at 250 metres, were joined only in 1933 and remain apart; at Verezzi, in the little square of Sant'Agostino, the yearly festival is held that earned the municipality its nickname, the village of theatre. The population is 2,327.

Saint Peter, patron of a church built on an anti-pirate fort

📅 Every year, on 29 June

Borgio Verezzi celebrates Saint Peter the Apostle on 29 June; its church was built in 1789 on the foundations of a 16th-century fort erected against pirate raids, itself built over the remains of the old castle.
