The patron saint of Borgio Verezzi is Saint Peter the Apostle, celebrated on 29 June. The parish church dedicated to him was built in 1789, with work completed between 1806 and 1808, over the remains of the old castle of Burgum Albinganeum, one of the two ancient settlements — together with Veretium — that gave rise to the municipality, once possessions of the bishop-count of Albenga and then, from 1076, of the Benedictine abbey of San Pietro in Varatella near Toirano.
Lacking a defensive position in a period plagued by pirate raids, the town remedied this gap in 1564, when, to a design by Antonio Rodaro, sent by the Senate of the Republic of Genoa, a tower was first built, still present today, and then a fort, in 1588; the latter was destroyed before 1789 to build the present church of San Pietro on its foundations. The town, today nicknamed "the theatre town" for the theatre festival founded in 1967 by Enrico Rembado and Maria Valentinotti Rossi, is also known for the karst caves of Valdemino, discovered in 1933.
