Calice Ligure

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,683 · Postal code: 17020

In 1449 marquis Galeotto I Del Carretto gave the parish of Calice a chased silver cup, to thank the village for the loyalty it had shown in the war against Genoa. A hundred years later, in 1558, it was from here that the revolt against the misrule of Alfonso II Del Carretto set out, and at its head was a peasant, Antonio Capellino.

The story goes that Capellino, on his wedding day, instead of handing his wife over to the marquis for the ius primae noctis, turned up with a hundred men and a she-ass. The revolt spread to the whole marquisate of Finale. The village lies inland, where the Carbuta flows into the Pora. The population is 1,683.
