Tovo San Giacomo

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,489 · Postal code: 17020

Tower clocks made at Tovo San Giacomo travelled a long way: the Bergallo family built them in their house-workshop between 1860 and 1980, and one of them ended up in 1934 at the Salesian mission of Puerto Santa Cruz, in Patagonia. Since 1997, in the old town hall at Bardino Nuovo, mechanisms, hands and dials have been kept in the tower clock museum.

At Bardino Vecchio, instead, stands the first and only monument in the world to the Cristezzanti, the men who carry the wooden crucifixes in processions. The village name comes from tuvu, tufa, after an overhang in the Bronati district; the three communities of Tovo, Bardino Vecchio and Bardino Nuovo were put back together in 1928. The population is 2,489.
