Mallare

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,200 · Postal code: 17045

The name comes from apples: malula, little apple, and on the coat of arms there is an apple tree with golden fruit. But what fed Mallare for centuries was the wood: charcoal, timber and iron beaten in the forges along the streams.

At Fornelli stands the former abbey of Santa Maria e San Lazzaro, of 1179: church and hospital in one complex, with three apses, a barrel vault and frescoes inside. The village lies in the upper Val Bormida, where the Biterno and the Cravarezza meet. The population is 1,200.
