Magliolo

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 917 · Postal code: 17020

The name is said to come from the Latin malleolus, the vine shoot planted so that it takes root. The village lies in the Val Maremola, where three different worlds meet — Mediterranean, Alpine and continental — a rare thing in Europe: there are wild boar and wolves in the woods, and once there were bears.

With the whole marquisate of Finale, Magliolo was sold to Spain in 1598. Genoa bought it back in 1713, and to have it paid the emperor forty-six tonnes of silver coin. The population is 917.
