Saint John the Baptist, patron of Pertini's town
📅 Every year, on 24 June
Stella celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June; the church dedicated to him stands in the hamlet of the same name, birthplace of President Sandro Pertini.
The Grimaldi, the ones from Monaco, started here. In 1251, after the surrender of Savona, Stella became the family's first fief; Menton and the Principality would come only later. The castle paid for it, destroyed twice within a few decades, and in 1385 it was the people of Stella themselves who drove the Grimaldi out.
The municipality is a scattered one and the town hall stands at San Giovanni, the village where Sandro Pertini was born, president of the Republic from 1978 to 1985, and where he rests with his wife Carla Voltolina. All around, the upper basin of the Sansobbia and the woods of the Beigua park. The population is 3,066.
