Celle Ligure

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 5,353 · Postal code: 17015

Celle appears for the first time in 1014, in a document of emperor Henry II the Saint concerning the donation of the estate called Cellae to Lombard, Piedmontese and Ligurian lords. The Aleramici had already built a monastery there dedicated to Saint Benignus, perhaps even earlier.

On 6 February 1186 the lords of Celle signed a peace treaty with the comune of Savona, and with them the representatives of Varazze, Albisola, Sassello and Ponzone swore too: the same towns we find together in the centuries that follow. The fief belonged to the marquises of Ponzone, descendants of Aleramo, and Genoa and Savona long contended for it. There are 5,353 residents.
