Varazze

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 13,461 · Postal code: 17019

The island of Lanzarote bears the name of a man from Varazze. In 1312 Lanzerotto Malocello went past the Pillars of Hercules and landed there: the island has been called after him ever since. That he was a sailor is no surprise, in a town whose trade has always been building boats.

The name says it: Varagine, the place where ships are launched. Before that came the Roman station Ad Navalia, then the yards that Savona and Genoa fought over all through the Middle Ages, then in the nineteenth century the Baglietto yards, which built boats for kings. There are 13,461 residents.
