Sassello

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,882 · Postal code: 17046

The soft amaretti of Sassello are made with almond paste and armelline, that is what sits inside the apricot stone. The recipe dates from the nineteenth century, the village holds a fair for it every year, and the local museum has a section on the amaretti factories.

In 1290 the marquises of Ponzone sold the village to the Genoese Branca Doria, who proclaimed himself lord of Sassello without waiting for any investiture. The place lies between the Faiallo pass and the Giovo hill, inside the Beigua park, and in winter it really freezes: on the night of 6 February 2012 the thermometer read twenty-two degrees below zero. The population is 1,882.
