The patron saints of Caravaggio are Saints Fermo and Rustico, celebrated on 9 August in the church dedicated to them.
According to Catholic tradition, on 26 May 1432 the Virgin Mary appeared in the countryside surrounding the town, since then venerated as Santa Maria del Fonte or Our Lady of Caravaggio: the great sanctuary rose on the site, a place of devotion also in other countries, including the Brazilian town of Farroupilha, home to the largest Marian temple dedicated to her. In 1962, Bishop Danio Bolognini declared her co-patroness of the diocesan community of Cremona. The town also holds the Monastery of San Bernardino and the Porta Nuova arch.
