The patron of Garlate is Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, celebrated on 26 December in the Church of Santo Stefano Protomartire, the town's provostal church.
Garlate was the seat of the ancient parish of Santo Stefano, which belonged to the Duchy of Milan and the Archdiocese of Milan, before being superseded in 1574 by the Parish of Sant'Agnese di Olginate. The town holds the Museo della Seta Abegg and the Shrine of Saints Cosmas and Damian, and overlooks the Parco Adda Nord and the Fonte del Rugòlon.
