Vizzolo Predabissi

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,045 · Postal code: 20070

In the chief of the municipal arms stands the symbol of Milan, and it is not a convenient choice: it refers to a peace treaty of 1198 between Milan and Lodi in which, according to the Milanese historian Giorgio Giulini, it was established that the land of Vighezzolo — as Vizzolo was then called — should belong to the Milanese for ever. Eight hundred years later the clause still holds: the commune lies in the metropolitan city of Milan, and the boundary with the Lodi area runs a few hundred metres away.

Four thousand and forty-five inhabitants, and the growth is all recent: in 1751 there were 280, in 1859 still 533. The full name dates from 1863; before that it was simply Vizzolo. In 1811 the municipality was temporarily annexed to Melegnano, whose parish already included it. The most notable building is the Romanesque church of Santa Maria in Calvenzano, which in 1964 absorbed into its jurisdiction the parish established at that time.
