Petrella Tifernina

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,206 · Postal code: 86024

The church of San Giorgio Martire is twelfth-century and has been a national monument since 1901: three portals covered in carving, three naves divided by two colonnades that do not match, a monolithic font, a crypt and a bell tower thirty metres high. In the village the historian Mario Ziccardi also recognised a caerdroia, the labyrinth of Celtic tradition: it would be the only one in the Mediterranean.

The village, 1,206 residents, was simply Petrella: the Tifernina was added in 1862 so as not to confuse it with the others, and recalls Tifernum, the Roman settlement by the Biferno. In 1940 the fascist authorities thought of merging it with Castellino del Biferno into a brand-new town, to be called Castellini Nuovo; nothing came of it.
