The patron saint of Castelmauro is Saint Leonard the Confessor, celebrated on 6 November in the church dedicated to him: of Romanesque origin, it has a basilical three-nave structure in 18th-century style, with a Baroque facade flanked by a Gothic bell tower resting against the ruins of the medieval facade.
In the 13th century a castle owned by the Canzano family was built in the town, then known as Castelluccio Acquaborrana, later destroyed by the great earthquake that struck central-southern Italy in 1456.
