The patron saint of Cercemaggiore is Saint Vincent the martyr, celebrated on 11 September. In the 15th century a statue of the Madonna della Libera was brought to a hill overlooking the town, where a sanctuary was built: the nearby convent of Santa Maria della Libera, built by the diocesan clergy in 1412, passed to the Dominican friars in 1489 and was enlarged in the 17th century, still holding today a wooden statue of the Madonna dating from 1412 and a fresco depicting the Last Supper.
After the abolition of feudalism in 1806, Cercemaggiore passed from Capitanata to the province of Molise, and in February 1861 to Campania, with the new province of Benevento: it returned to the province of Campobasso, the only one among the many Molise municipalities definitively taken away from Molise, only after 66 years of long political battles, in 1927. The town also preserves the baronial palace, a rebuilding of the old Lombard castle transformed in the 16th century by don Diomede Carafa, and the parish church of Santa Maria della Croce, formerly the old castle's chapel, damaged by the 1456 earthquake and rebuilt in 1582.
