The patron saint of Montagano is Saint Alexander, celebrated on 10 July. The town holds historical significance because Pope Celestine V, born Pietro da Morrone, studied and took his vows, around 1230, at the abbey of Santa Maria di Faifoli: an ancient monastery dating from the 12th century, located about three kilometres outside the town centre, whose name, «Faifoli», appears to derive from the term Fagifulae.
Montagano also preserves historical traces in the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, in that of Sant'Antonio and in the Monastery of Sant'Elia, as well as the Cappella Tagliaferri.
