Limosano

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 826 · Postal code: 86022

In the twelfth century Limosano had a bishop, and the cathedral was Santa Maria Maggiore: under the church floor, in a sunken chamber, some of those bishops still lie with their medieval tombstones. The diocese has been gone for centuries, but not the name: on 5 February 2018 the Church took it up again as a titular see, and an archbishop now carries the title of Limosano.

The village, 826 residents, sits on a tuff hill, with the ducal castle wedged in among the houses, so that walking under it you would not know it. Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries many left, and a good share of the descendants of Limosano now live in Toronto and the Niagara area.
